Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1977
Manufacturer: Brantford Ontario Canada Centennial Commission
Neat find out of a home. This is a large coin or token that is marked with a one dollar value for a limited time. This is an "Anniversary Dollar" issued by the city of Brantford in Ontario, Canada, in commemoration of the city's centennial in 1977, showing an expiration date on one side of September 6, 1977.

Round, about 1 1/4 inches in diameter, a large half dollar type size. Metal, silver in color, not sure what material this is made of, it may bemade of nickel. Weighs .5 ounce or 14.2 grams.

Fully marked on both sides in raised letters. One side states "Anniversary Dollar, Value One Dollar in Brantford, Expires September 6, 1977" in circular fashion along the outer edge, with the center stating "City of Brantford" and showing the city seal or Coat of Arms which in a ribbon or banner under the figures (an Indian and a Settler/Farmer/Lumberjack carrying an ax) includes the Latin phrase, "Industria et Perseverantia" which translates to "Energy and Persistence". The other side of the coin states "Brantford Centennial, 1877-1977" in circular fashion along the outer edge, with the center showing what we think is the city logo. The outer edge of the token is ribbed with small vertical lines. We believe this coin was meant to permit a $1 purchase at any of the merchants in Brantford during the time of the centennial celebration, and had no dollar value after that.

We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles, including one with a quarter for size comparison. Given the all-over silver coin type coloring, this was hard to photograph as the camera light reflected highly on the metal surface, causing white "hot spots", "blanding out" some of the detail, and making the coin appear several shades of silver color, rather than the bright, shiny silver color this is. So some of the images were shot without the camera light, which makes them appear darker. This has the expected, usual, shiny silver color metal coin surface. We have not shined or cleaned this token and are selling as is, as found.

We are not coin graders or experts and cannot grade this coin, so we will describe the condition as we see it. To us, this looks in very nice condition but not mint or uncirculated. It was found loose, not stored in a coin sleeve, so it may be a used coin. This does exhibit wear including scratches (including one scratch or rubbed line visible in the Brantford city logo), rubbed spots, tiny indents, perhaps low surface flakes, etc., but really not bad. All graphic details are fully there and visible, and there are no major chips or cracks.

A nice collectible which would make a fun addition to any collection related to the city of Brantford or Ontario or Canada overall, as well as a collection related to centennial celebrations in general or a grouping of centennial coins or coins of one dollar value.
