Circa: 1903 Manufacturer: Sterling Coin Holders
Neat find out of a home. This is an antique, solid sterling silver piece, weighing 24.7 grams. It is a 2 sided coin holder or sovereign case, with a locket-type thick outer piece which one opens with a fingernail where the two pieces meet. Inside is a separate part which can be pushed in on both sides so as to hold coins on both sides. The outer case closes tightly, all works well, and there is a ring on the topside so that this could be attached to a chatelaine or watch or any other type of ring holder.
Marked in two places with the word "Sterling", both on the outer hanging ring and on the inside coin piece on one side. Under the Sterling mark on the coin piece is also impressed "PAT'D 1903" so this piece has a 1903 Patent Date. From the very dark black coloring throughout this piece, which is seen with much aged sterling silver tarnishing, we do believe this is an Edwardian period piece (from 1901-1910, based on some internet research).
This solid sterling silver antique coin holder is oval in shape, with the oval case measuring about 1 1/4 inches length, about 1 1/8 inches width (including the outer hinge for the case), and 7/16 inch depth. When the hanging ring is included, the greatest length is about 1 3/4 inches. The interior coin holder itself is round, about 7/8 inch in diameter.
There is no ornamentation or engraving or initials on this piece. It is smooth, solid black in coloring and look. On the coin holder itself, there is a raised all-over design, we guess to aid in getting the coins in and out.
We've provided 8 images to try and show from all angles, inside and out, as well as a close-up of one of the markings. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Terrific antique condition. As noted prior, it is all-over dark tarnished and might not be able to be shined up to its original silver color, which is often the case with these very old sterling pieces (it would take a great deal of work to try and shine this if that could be done, we are selling as is/as found, often people want these antique pieces in as found condition). Everything appears to work fine (we provided one image with us pushing in the coin holder sections so that you can see that they move fine). This does have expected age/use/storage wear inside and out via some scratches, rubbed wear, unevenness to the tarnishing, scuffs, etc., but nothing bad at all nor out of the ordinary. No cracks, chips, breaks or crazing that we see.
Hard to find, particularly of this age and in this great vintage shape. A nice addition to any antique coin holder collection or for a collection related to chatelaine pieces. Also great for adding to a period Edwardian grouping.
