GUNSIGHT ANTIQUES

Manufacturer: American antique
A fine condition all original and period Civil War Enlisted Infantry horn, hat insignia. Larger and less ornamental than the prescribed embroidered infantry officer hat device, the die struck sheet brass infantry enlisted device provided for by the later General Order #3 of March 1858 was authorized for wear on the front of the Hardee Hat. with adoption of the Forage (‘Bummer") Cap this device was moved to the top of the crown where it was worn throughout the Civil War. Fresh from decades of storage, this example remains in as issued condition with only a bit of soft age patina to it’s body and soldered attachment loops in addition to a slightly thinner gauge brass than is used with the reproductions as testimony to the knowledgeable eye that it is an original Civil War issue strike. (see: History of Artillery, Cavalry & Infantry Service Insignia by Laframboise and Philip’s Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields & Campsites of the Civil War ) We also have the equivalent in an enlisted artillery device.
