A fine image of a classic moment in English society at the turn of the century. Elegantly dressed men and women strolling the grounds of what looks to be a park. Parasols and top hats at every turn. It is identified on the back with a note that says The Mayor of South Shields (J. Rhawson) Garden Party, August 1901. This is not a posed photo. Possibly taken by an event photographer who would then sell his photos afterwards. Photographer: J. Downey & Sons, 17 & 19 Eldon St., South Shields which is on the River Tyne in Northeast England. Might be the River Tyne in the background. Size is 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of image is excellent. Card is near perfect, just some slight discoloration on the edges, but not in the photo. |
