C 5th Maine Volunteer Infantry and his wife Lucinda (Lulu Spiller. While both photo mounts were trimmed to accommodate these scarce metal frames, both are backmarked by Portland, Maine photographer George M. Howe and both are period identified in what clearly appears to be Capt. Spiller’s hand. (see period example signature) Commissioned on June 24, 1861 as 2nd Lt. of Co. K of the soon to be hard fought 5th Maine Infantry, Spiller was promoted to 1st Lt. on September23, 1861 then to Capt. Co. C on June 15,1863.
