Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: early 1900's-30's
Condition: Good++
Manufacturer: GREENE - TWEED
This is a top quality used rawhide tipped weighted mallet with the metal head that has 1.25" diameter holes so that new 1.25" diameter rawhide inserts can be inserted when needed.  (Rawhide inserts can be purchesed seperately).  Most new 1.25" inserts made today are about 1/32" oversize, so with a little sanding or filing, new ones can be easily press fit into place, and they stay in very well because of the reverse taper in the metal head hole. It is in good condition overall, the rawhide tips are in  good+ condition, with some face wear but well intact with plenty of use left in them. The inserts are about 1" long and can be used on both sides. This hammer has the 1.25" diameter raw-hide inserts in it. The handle is in very good shape, very well attached to the metal head. The hardwood handle is also marked by the maker and says this is Model No. 1 (I assume is the smallest of 2 or 3 larger sizes.  This one weighs 1.5 pounds and is marked "GREENE-TWEED DEFENSE HAMMER U.S.A. NO. ? in raised cast lettering on the split head area. Greene - Tweed made mallets dating back to 1893, and we assume this one was made for military use either WWI or WWII. Very nice, very clean, ready to use! Very Rare!
